Film / Project Synopsis:

WITNESS to a FARCE
A Surrealist Short Film in Three Acts

Set to an original score by Gabriel Chwojnik, Witness to a Farce is a 20-minute silent film told entirely through AI-generated imagery. Fran Forman’s metaphorical film explores the absurdity of complicity and the fragile nature of authoritarian power in an unnamed mid-20th century Eastern European town.
The story opens in an intimate, quiet space: a woman is doing chores in her kitchen, accompanied by her cat. She becomes alarmed when she sees soldiers arriving in the town square. When her mirror suddenly shatters, it signals a violent break in her reality. A tyrannical man, the ‘Leader’, begins tearing up laws in the town’s courtyard and erects a grand monument to himself. To cope with the trauma of this invasion, the woman paints her face white, transforming into a silent mime to passively observe the unfolding tragedy.
To mask the creeping militarization of the town and secure the citizens’ complicity, the ‘Leader’ gifts them a magnificent, surreal circus. The town eagerly embraces the distraction, launching into a fever dream of festivity. Clowns, animals, and dancers fill the streets, overshadowing the marching soldiers in their midst. The ‘Leader’, now acting as the grand Ringmaster, orchestrates the bizarre spectacle. But the illusion cannot hold. A sudden, violent fire erupts, consuming the circus and sending the townspeople fleeing in panic, including the mime and her young companion, a boy.
In the aftermath, the mime and the boy return to a smoldering, devastated town. The great, imposing statue of the ‘Leader’ is exposed for what it truly is: a flimsy hallow shell made of newsprint. As rain falls, the paper dissolves into a soggy mess, leaving nothing behind but an empty armature with refugees grasping for the detritus. Finding refuge in a house, the mime finally washes the white paint from her face, shedding her role as a passive witness, She is returning to the woman she once was and, as the silent observer, the guardian of truth. The boy reappears. Looking out the window, they see life persisting—flowers beginning to peek through the rubble. In the film’s final moments, the woman and boy reunite with her cat from the opening scene, who has survived the wreckage. The cat turns its gaze directly to the camera, a challenge to the audience to reflect on the farce they have just witnessed.
